The Istituto Sperimentale Modelli GEOtecnici Società  responsabilità Limitata, (ISMGEO), is an experimental research center that operates in the field of geotechnical engineering, comes from the ISMES S.p.A. a company founded by ENEL mainly for the feasibility studies of the nuclear power plants. The ISMGEO is a center for basic and advanced geotechnical tests, aimed at assessing the state of homeland security, the mitigation of the effects of potentially harmful natural phenomena, such as landslides, avalanches, earthquakes, floods, and the design and construction of large structures, it is also a center of research in innovative areas such as the reuse of recycled plastics as construction materials. The ISMGEO is based on two elements: the expertise of a group of technicians and the presence of some large equipment unique in Italy, such as the Calibration Chamber and the Seismic Geotechnical Centrifuge, which allow the realization of tests on physical models. The shaking table installed into the centrifuge allows the simulation of earthquakes of small-scale physical models for studies of mitigation of earthquake-induced effects on geotechnical structures and for soil-structure interaction problems; some of the main results achieved have been presented on many international conferences and various publications on the main specialized magazines. ISMGEO cooperates with numerous Italian research centres and universities, provides equipment and qualified technicians to Ph.D. and master students and is visited by several researchers. ISMGEO has been involved in numerous national and international projects by performing tests on physical models together with laboratory tests and in-situ geotechnical activities, among which, those relevant for the project of developing methodologies for mitigating the effects of earthquake liquefaction, are: - Physical modeling in seismic geotechnical centrifuge of: SISMAPO Project: Centrifuge Tests to Evaluate Performance of the Po River Banks during Earthquakes on the behalf of the Italian Department for the Civil Protection; Static and dynamic centrifuge modeling of landslide stabilization with large-diameter shafts (EUCENTRE); deep foundations of mobile barriers for safeguarding Venice lagoon from hightides (MOSE project, Consorzio Venezia Nuova); enlargement of Montedomini tunnel (A 14 Highway enlargement design, Spea Engineering S.p.A.). - Characterization of soil for the new metro lines ofRome, Varsavia, andThessaloniki. - Characterization of soils of Lido, Malamocco, Chioggia inlets (Venice lagoon, MOSE project) and characterization of soils for the construction of high-speed railways; characterization of soil foundation of: Fusina, Porto Marghera, Porto Tolle, Porto Romano plans and of re-gasification plans at Priolo, Gioia Tauro, Panigaglia and Porto Empedocle sites. - Advanced laboratory tests on large dimension frozen gravel samples (d=300 mm) for theMessinaStraitbridge project (Eurolink).
