Tailings dams, essential for storing mining byproducts, represent one of the most significant geotechnical challenges in engineering. These structures are exposed to diverse factors like material variability, unsaturated conditions, particle segregation, and environmental interactions. Despite the reliance on numerical models to simulate their behavior, the limitations of these models are increasingly evident, particularly after recent disasters like Mount Polley (Canada) and Brumadinho (Brazil). Such events underscore the complexity of tailings dams and the urgent need for improved risk prediction methods.

The Bridgewater Canal in Cheshire, a marvel of 18th-century engineering, recently faced a dramatic breach due to heavy flooding, marking the first major collapse of the waterway in over five decades. This historic canal, originally built to transport coal and now a beloved leisure site, experienced a structural failure near Dunham Massey, with its elevated embankment caving in 12 meters above the River Bollin.

Soil improvement is a critical process in geotechnical engineering, aimed at modifying soil properties to enhance performance. This technique is commonly used to increase load-bearing capacity, control settlement, and reduce the potential for liquefaction. PLAXIS, a finite element analysis software, is extensively used for modelling such improvements, especially column-based techniques.

Prefabricated vertical drains (PVDs) are essential tools in geotechnical engineering, particularly for improving the properties of soft soils. By facilitating drainage and accelerating consolidation, PVDs play a critical role in the stability and settlement of soil. The use of PLAXIS for modelling drains allows engineers to predict and analyse their behaviour effectively. This article will guide you through the process of modelling PVDs in PLAXIS, covering key aspects such as geometry setup, material properties, boundary conditions, and result interpretation.

I come across this type of Block in matrix which is very considated, and it is found that from last 10- year this type of slope is stable, however if we take a disturbed sampleof this and do triaxial for the matrix matiral ,, the strength comes out to be very less,, I am doing my PhD in BIM,, Let me know If we can discuss and collaborate

The second-generation Eurocode 7 marks a pivotal evolution in geotechnical engineering standards, introducing reliability-based design approaches to enhance precision and adaptability. The recently released guideline, “Reliability-based verification of limit states for geotechnical structures”, emphasizes methodologies to address inherent uncertainties in geotechnical projects. This shift moves away from overly conservative practices, promoting designs that balance safety, sustainability, and cost-efficiency.

Dear GLHEPRO Development Team,
I am currently working on a borehole heat exchanger simulation and would like to know if it is possible to define or add an elliptical-shaped U-tube pipe instead of the standard circular configuration in GLHEPRO.
If this feature is not currently available, are there any workarounds or alternative modeling approaches you would recommend? Additionally, do you have any plans to include non-circular pipe configurations in future updates?
I appreciate your time and look forward to your response.
Best regards,
1. The large-scale slope stability check is acceptable.
2. Why is there displacement at the heel of the retaining wall?
3. Although overall sliding is unlikely to occur, what is the cause of the displacement at the heel? Should this be a concern? Should appropriate reinforcement be implemented?
How do you assess the future of geotechnics with artificial intelligence?
Evaluation of Groundnut Shell Ash (GSA) as a Sustainable Material for Soil Stabilization in Construction. How can this be done and what the procedures one needs to perform before achievement of the stability of soil.
