Geoengineer.org Pile Foundations
28 Nov 2025
Augercast (CFA) piles combine continuous-flight drilling with simultaneous grout placement to create deep foundations with minimal noise and vibration. Our recently updated educational resource describes the installation sequence, the role of the hollow-stem auger, typical soil conditions where the technique is effective, and key design and construction considerations.

A major geotechnical incident occurred in southwest China when the newly completed Hongqi Bridge, a 758-meter-long structure in Maerkang city, Sichuan province, partially collapsed following signs of slope instability and landslide activity. The collapse happened in early November 2025, just months after the bridge was opened to traffic.

What obstacles is artificial intelligence currently facing in the geotechnical engineering sector?
I am currently persuing my final year in the field of Geotechnical Engineering in National institute of technology karnataka ,India.
I am particularly interested in offshore foundations, reliability-based design, numerical simulation using FLAC,but I am struggling to narrow down a precise and meaningful project topic.
Since you have expertise in this area, I would greatly appreciate your guidance in selecting a suitable project topic that is both feasible and valuable for my academic growth and industry relevance.
Thank you very much for your time and consideration
Working on a project where the backyard is on a slope. We have roughly 40 yards of mostly clay and some bedrock dirt that was dug up from a different part of the property - Question is should we use this dirt to fill/try to level parts of the sloped backyard or would it be better to get rid of the clay and use something else to fill?
Most contractors are saying to use it but I'm concerned about stability. Most of the site has bedrock within 18-24". What's best practice when it comes to trying to level? - filling a hole is easy/makes sense but actually making the backyard more level it seems weather we cut or fill we'll be putting up retaining walls.
See below for backyard elevation. Thanks

If you choose to fill your backyard with clayey material, you should compact the material according to proctor conditions and protect it from water damage by implementing various drainage measures. You should also build a wall appropriate for the height of the fill you'll be filling slope. If you're building a concrete wall, be aware that your drain holes may fill over time and become inoperable. Finally, regardless of the method you use, analyze all your construction projects with appropriate software to ensure they are safe. Keep up the good work...
If a dam is almost certain to fail, should it be intentionally breached, or should we wait for it to fail naturally?
We had a similar problem when an extraordinary flood occurred due to exceptional rainfall. We built a drainage channel alongside the dam to partially empty it before the peak flood arrived, thus mitigating the surge and supplementing the dam's spillway with this new channel.
After this event, we reinforced the irrigation dam, and it continues to operate to this day.
For a research purpose , I am currently analyzing soil properties for soil classification implications specifically within Dhaka city. The goal of this research is to contribute to a better understanding of our local ground conditions, which can benefit future design and construction projects in the area.
This is a collaborative effort for our engineering community, and its success depends on shared knowledge.
For this reason, I am seeking geotechnical investigation reports and soil test reports from projects located anywhere within Dhaka city. Reports containing data such as SPT, Atterberg limits, grain size analysis would be incredibly valuable.
