All, I have some on-line resources on my YouTube channel Introduction to Geotechnical Engineering (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCyt3w3SogxUSJ7RSxQusXXA) which you may find useful. While there aren't actual labs recorded here there are lab prep videos and some lab animations. I don't have a nice front end for the channel, but it is organized into playlists by chapters of Coduto,Yeung & Kitch (2011).

Some webcasts which you might find useful:

Hi Bill,

Thanks for doing this. I'm sure it will be a big help to a lot of us. I liked the quality of your presentations and was wondering how you produced them.

I am particularly interested in how you got the audio quality to be so good, how you zoomed in on aspects of the slides and how you recorded the entire episode.

Thanks,

Chris Baxter

Chris,  I use a combination of PowerPoint, Camtasia, and Doceri.  PowerPoint is for text, and basic figures.  Sometimes I use the animation tools in PP but that's really time consuming.  Doceri is a great digital whiteboard tool for the iPad.  It's my favorite table tool and it's only $20 for a license.  Camtasia I use for capturing screen video and the final editing of the webcasts.  I just use a mid-range headset with boom mic, nothing fancy.  It's really the compostion and getting the pedagogy right for the students that's the key.  The audio and video just have to be good enough. Most student now are watching on their phones or a tablet.  Doesn't have to be HD or anything.

Bill - I agree with Chris, your videos are super good quality.  Quite the laborious setup, I am glad many will be using them and the gratitude will multiply.  I sent you a request for the lab data via email, since now we need to have the student do some data reduction/interpretation, not touch the soil, but massage the data.  :)

thanks,  ronaldo.-

All, I've completed the webcasts for the 1D-Consolidation test.  The videos are available at the following YouTube playlist https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLKVvJWYS08Yd_XLubt6GFhLEN4dHbzCKV

There are four videos

  1. 1-D Consolidation Test Overview:  Just a 1:30 intro to the following four videos

  2. CE 326 Mod 10.5a Consolidation test:  Theory behind the test 16  min

  3. 1D Consolidation Test: Lab Procedures:  27 min video of the test preparation and execution.  Sorry for the length.  As Plutarch wrote, I didn't have time to make it shorter

  4. CENG 3341 Consol Data Conversion: 27 min step-by-step video on how to reduce the data from the GeoTac/Trautwein data file.

I have data for one test and will have data for two more by the end of the week.  I've got to finish an exam before getting the data ready for you.  You can post the video links to your LMS now.

For those with data files available, please post them in the files area of the group.  I've just put some consoldation data there.

I've completed the videos for CU Triaxial testing.  I broke the demo up into four videos.  You can find them at:

The data for the tests is uploaded in the files area of this group.

Renewed interest for 2020-2021 Academic year

The Geo-Institute held a webcast on online teaching in Geotech, Ready, Set, Remote! Lessons Learned During the 2020 Transition to Online Learning. I covered resources for online labs during the webcast.  This site is one of the resources I listed, so we may see more traffic here soon.  A copy of my presentation slide are in the files section of this group.

This is a reminder that our catalog of avialble mateirals and needs is still available for updating on Google Docs.  Please update if you have new materials available for folks.  Also please add materials to the file section
