    • Project: Verification of MSE Wall Foundation Bearing Capacity Based on the CPT and DCPT (August 2019 to present)
      Supervisors: Prof. Monica Prezzi, Prof. Rodrigo Salgado, and Dr. Peter Becker
      Summary:
      • Performed in-situ and laboratory testing to characterize the foundation soil and the backfill material used in the construction of an 8-m-high mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) bridge abutment in Whitestown, Indiana.
      • Assisted with the instrumentation of the abutment using strain gauges, earth pressure cells, inclinometers, crackmeters, and settlement sensors to monitor its behavior both during construction and in service.
      • Currently working on (i) collecting and analyzing the instrumentation data, and (ii) 3D finite element (FE) simulations of the abutment in ABAQUS using an advanced two-surface-plasticity constitutive sand model together with innovative strength reduction algorithms to investigate the formation of shear bands and the collapse mechanism of the abutment.

      Project: Development of a Comprehensive CPT-Based Geotechnical Design Manual for Indiana Transportation Infrastructure (January 2017 to June 2021)
      Supervisors: Prof. Monica Prezzi, Prof. Rodrigo Salgado, and Dr. Peter Becker
      Summary:
      • Worked on the development of two volumes of a cone penetration test (CPT)-based geotechnical design manual for the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT).
      • Prepared detailed, step-by-step procedures and guidelines for the design of axially loaded footings, piles, and pile groups installed in both coarse-grained and fine-grained soils using CPT results.
      • Developed excel spreadsheets for the implementation of the methods by INDOT engineers and consultants in routine design of transportation infrastructure projects.
      • Organized a workshop for INDOT engineers and consultants to demonstrate the application of the CPT-based design methods using example problems formulated based on instrumented case histories of full-scale footing and pile load tests.
