Dr. Annandale has 40 years of experience as a civil engineer specializing in water resources engineering. He works in the field of water-earth material-structure interaction and offers services in the fields of dam safety, fluvial hydraulics, design and engineering; reservoir and water supply management. He has published numerous peer-reviewed papers and is author, co-author and contributing author to seven books on sedimentation and scour.
Part of his practice focuses on sustainability and climate change effects, particularly as it relates to water resource development and management. In this regard he provides services for planning and policy development to ensure water resource and water infrastructure sustainability, particularly as it relates to water supply, hydropower and flood management. He has developed techniques for the rapid assessment of climate change effects on water supply reliability. He is an expert in reservoir sedimentation management, having authored one of the first books on this topic, having co-developed the Life Cycle Management Concept for the World Bank, and having worked on numerous reservoir sedimentation management projects around the world. Reservoir sedimentation is one of the principal factors leading to non-sustainability of surface water resource infrastructure. It exacerbates the adverse effects of climate change on water supply reliability. Dr. Annandale is known for the development of the Erodibility Index Method that can be used to determine the erodibility of any earth material, including rock. The method has been accepted by the engineering profession, is used nationally and internationally for design and safety assessment of infrastructure and is included in federal and state manuals and guidelines. He authored the book "Scour Technology", published by McGraw-Hill in 2006, which has become a standard reference in this field of specialization. He has worked extensively on dam safety projects, focusing particularly on hydraulics, dam foundation scour and spillway safety. Having worked on numerous river projects around the world, including river restoration, bank stabilization, and pipeline, dam foundation and bridge pier scour projects, and investigating aggradation and degradation of rivers, Dr. Annandale offers specialized knowledge, including sediment transport modeling experience, in this area of expertise. Dr. Annandale consults nationally and internationally and has worked on projects in numerous countries including the United States of America, Canada, Australia, Turkey, Switzerland, Papua, Kalimantan, Sumbawa, the Philippines, Morocco, Kenya, Malawi, Haiti, Sri Lanka, South Africa, Israel, Colombia, Venezuela, Mexico, Laos and Zaire. He is often invited to deliver keynote addresses at national and international conferences in his areas of expertise.
