    • ROCK ENGINEER

    • ANGLO PLATINUM:

Underground mapping of tunnels, stopes, raises, shafts and large chambers.
Technical report writing following each visit for surface and underground investigation.
Monthly risk assessment for underground access developments (shaft, haulages, crosscuts, travelling ways, decline shafts etc.) and production panels, winzes, raises and stopes.
Plan / map reading and scrutinisation then planning ahead on developments, including changes in mining layouts, mining directions and mining sequence. Use such plans to assess compliance with the codes of practice and special instructions.
Accurate plotting of data collected underground on survey plans.
      Offsetting pillars, faces, remnants, etc.
Training mining staff and students on rock engineering issues both on surface and during underground visits by explaining in details what, why, when and where things must be done and the consequences of negligence.
Underground visits to stopes and developments. On the way to (and from) the area of interest, the condition and the performance of the excavations and support system will be checked and new recommendations and requests made where conditions are unsatisfactory.
Monthly quality control for shotcreting, wire meshing and lacing, rock bolts, steel and timber sets, cable anchors and tendons installed by contractors. These support units including pillars, other permanent stope support units and temporary support were also checked on regular basis during underground visits.
Office work: This ranged from support design, planning, writing reports, general administration, checking and approval of survey layouts etc.
Install, use and manage shaft and underground monitoring instrumentation. Use, interpret and plot seismic network results.
Liase and work with consultants and researchers on planning, installation, monitoring and testing of new and improved monitoring instrumentation and support units.
Underground assessment of rock mass conditions, then draw up some recommendations on developments and stope faces based on the overall geological and geotechnical character of the mine.
Fall of ground and underground accident investigation. This includes detailed investigation on the nature, cause and extent of failure; demarcation of fall area underground and on plans; assess the loss of ground, equipment and lives; recommend and mark new support installation areas, travelling routes and abandoned areas for reestablishment; write a report and fill a fall of ground and accident report for submission; comment on what should be done in future to avoid recurrence.
Detailed geological and geotechnical core logging.
Discontinuity survey and plotting data on plans, use such data to plan mining directions, advise on type of explosives to be used, mark potentially dangerous wedges and plan on ad hock pillars positions and special support installation positions ahead of mining.
Acquire and use geological data such as dykes, sills and faults positions to plan and demarcate pillar positions, special areas, precautionary areas mining layouts and directions.
      Rock mass rating,
      Work with panel rating systems,
Shaft examination to check performance of the lining, collect data from monitoring instrumentation, and map cracks along this very important excavation.
Support design for special areas and or trial panels.
Testing and monitoring new support units and assessing the rock mass reaction.
Attending and participating in monthly planning meetings,
      Sampling,
