David Tonks has more than 50 years’ experience in geotechnics, civil and water engineering and related geological and geo-environmental matters. He has been responsible for a very wide range of projects including numerous foundations; slopes and landslide stabilisation works; transportation & infrastructure, roads and earthworks; ports, dams, river diversions, canals, weirs and drainage; groundwater, wastes, contaminated and derelict land; environmental studies, tailings dams, tips & lagoons.
Particular experience and interests include very soft ground, problematic soils and difficult ground conditions; ongoing / long term settlements; soil stabilisation, ground improvement and treatment; landslides and slope stability, engineered barriers & geosynthetics; work with marginal materials and ground treatment; re-use of materials, sustainability and geotechnical risk.
He has extensive experience on numerous projects around the world. He has also acted as an expert witness or advisor on numerous cases, many substantial, including most types of dispute resolution and on extensive legal and insurance work; public inquiries; specialist studies and advice.
