Debasis has over thirty years of international industrial experience in heavy civil and mining engineering, and infrastructure projects and over sixteen years' experience in teaching and research. He obtained his Bachelor of Technology degree (with honors) from BHU, Varanasi, India in 1985, an MS from University of Idaho in Moscow, Idaho, USA in 1992 and a PhD from the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada in 1997, all the degrees being in Civil Engineering. His interests are covers the areas of geotechnical earthquake engineering, liquefaction, ground improvement, subsurface investigation, mechanical behavior of geomaterials and numerical modeling. His professional experience include working for a large consulting engineering company in India between 1985 and 1991 and as a professional geotechnical engineer in Canada between 1997 and 2002. He has been involved with design and safety audit of a number of talings dams and ash storage facilities in Canada, US, Chile, Spain and India, a number of pipelines in India and Canada, design of embankments and foundations for earthquake loads in south Asia and the Americas and seismic risk assessment of foundations and structures in north America.
