Anywhere you can deploy a fiber optic cable, on the surface of or embedded in a structure, you have access to temperature measurement, accurate to within a few degrees C. Sensing cable surfaces and attachments are available which deliver strain measurement, down to a few micro strain. And this over distances of 50 km from a single interrogator, continuously, in real time, delivering data and alarms wherever you want them.
Listed in 'Specification, requirements and guidance notes’ of ‘ICE '(Institution of Civil Engineers) Specification for Piling and Embedded Retaining Walls,’ the system detects deformation, creep and ground movement in a range of geotechnical applications from tunnels to mines and dams.
