    • Rui Marques was born in Monção, Portugal, on the 29 April 1980. In 2003, he obtained a degree in Civil Engineering from University of Minho (UMinho). Rui started his professional carrier in 2005 by working for a contractor in Monção as an Engineer for the planning and management of road and urban infrastructure works. He finished in 2007 at UMinho the MSc dissertation "Development of an intelligent system to support compaction optimization of geomaterials in transportation network" by applying artificial intelligence techniques to the French guide of road earthworks (GTR), under the Project "Interaction Soil-Railway Track for High Speed Trains" funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). During 2008-2012, Rui developed at UMinho a PhD thesis on "New methodologies for seismic design of unreinforced and confined masonry structures", funded by an FCT PhD scholarship. In 2013-2014 he completed a postdoc stay at Catholic University of Peru (PUCP), where acted as Researcher, Lecturer and Advisor of the MSc Program in Civil Engineering. Rui investigated the theme of structural analysis of historical Peruvian masonry constructions. He was the Coordinator of the courses "Finite Element Theory" and "Thesis Seminar 1" and was the advisor of 3 MSc students of the Masters at PUCP. Rui was a member of the evaluation panel for research grants of the Peruvian Council for Science & Technology. He was, in late 2014, Invited Lecturer of the Andean University of Cusco. After returning to UMinho in 2015, Rui was Lecturer in the ELARCH edition (2016/2017) of the Advanced Masters in Structural Analysis of Monuments & Historical Constructions (SAHC), for Latin-American students. He acted as a consultant in structural analysis and assessment of new masonry buildings in Cape Verde and Portugal, as well as heritage buildings in Israel, New Zealand and Peru, e.g. Old Municipal Chambers (Christchurch) and Andahuaylillas Church (Cusco). Currently, Rui is a Research Associate of the Institute for Sustainability and Innovation in Structural Engineering (ISISE) at UMinho, mainly investigating the seismic behavior of masonry buildings. He is an expert in numerical macro-element modeling and pushover analysis of masonry structures. Rui is interested in earthquake engineering, experimental and numerical methods, innovative strengthening techniques, earthen constructions, sustainable construction, climate change, transportation geotechnics, machine learning, and data mining. He collaborated in 12 R&D projects, in Portugal and internationals, for seismic design and assessment of masonry constructions, e.g. Huaca de la Luna (Peru). Rui has supervised 2 PhD and 3 MSc students at UMinho. He is author of 70 technical/scientific publications, was reviewer for 33 journals and is in the Editorial Board of Materials (MDPI) and Frontiers in Built Environment. Rui is, since 2016, member of CEN/TC250/SC6/WG1 and was the technical secretary of the Project Team for task SC6.T1 "Masonry - Revised version of EN 1996-1-1", for CEN. He collaborated, from 2015 to 2018, in the work for the revision of EN 1996-1-1, Design of masonry structures, particularly in the proposal of design rules for confined masonry, in the scope of the EC Mandate "M/515 phase 1 tasks for the development of the 2nd generation of EN Eurocodes". Rui was involved in drafting the proposal for the ERC-funded project Stand4Heritage. He is an External Evaluator of the Research Grants of the PUCP. Rui is a Teacher of the Structural Analysis course of the Masters in Structural Engineering and was appointed as Lecturer of the Masonry and Heritage Structures course of the Masters in Civil Engineering, at UMinho. He co-authored a guide for the design of modern masonry buildings (cBloco Handbook) and a handbook for the seismic assessment and strengthening of existing masonry buildings, and was a Trainer in a course for practitioners in this last topic (for the Portuguese Engineers Association).
