My master's project places a focus on the scale effects associated with the direct shear test. To study these scale effects I am making use of mine waste rock from two mines, one in Quebec, Canada (Mine: Canadian Malartic) and the other is in Gauteng, South Africa (Mine: Modderfontein). This study is centred around the scale effects observed in the industry sized direct shear test (60 x 60 mm and 100 x 100 mm), but has a subordinate aim in identifying the best means of sample particle size distribution (PSD) modification when a material's PSD is too large to meet the ASTM requirements for a particular direct shear apparatus.
