Application of area correction in direct shear testing

Dear Geotechnical Colleagues:

I am working on shear strength characterization of MSW using large direct shear apparatus (300mm x 300mm x 200mm). I am looking for some basic clarification regarding the application of area correction. Do we have to apply area correction for both shear stress and normal stress? Some people apply to both shear stress and normal stress. Some other apply only to normal stress and some other do not apply at all.

I know this is very elementary question. Most of the text book did not provide a clear clarification on this.

Thanks and regards,

Dear Janaki,

The area correction should typically (for typical direct shear experimental setups) be applied to both normal and shear load. For the correction factor you can look at the ASTM source. An alternative place is the Geocomp manual: http://www.geocomp.com/files/faq_pdfs/SHEAR_FAQ.pdf bottom of p. 10 to top of p. 11. It is a function of your specimen cross-section.

Hope that helps,

Sally
