GEER Report: Haiti Earthquake of 12 January 2010
Dear colleagues: Following the earthquake of 12 January 2010 in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, researchers from numerous organizations worked collaboratively as a GEER team to perform a reconnaissance of geological, seismological, and geotechnical aspects of the earthquake effects. The results are summarized in a report recently published on the GEER web site at:
http://www.geerassociation.org/GEER_Post%20EQ%20Reports/Haiti_2010/Cover_Haiti10.html
Topics discussed include the source characteristics including aftershock patterns and a preliminary slip inversion; regional geology; surface faulting and coastal uplift; damage patterns and their relationship to geology and topography; the performance of port facilities and coastal infrastructure; liquefaction and lateral spreading in natural ground; the performance of road fills; and the occurrence of earthquake-induced landslides. I encourage you to have a look at the report to learn about some of the effects of this important event.
Sincerely,
Ellen Rathje
