Geotechnical Engineer (Field Investigations/Design) - Denver
Knight Piesold Consulting, an international company providing engineering and environmental services for the mining, power, water, transportation and construction sectors, is seeking a Geotechnical Engineer for Field Investigations and Design at our Denver CO office. This person will assist Senior Engineers in conducting geotechnical studies and field investigations related to civil and geotechnical engineering work with emphasis on mining, renewable energy, and hydropower facilities. Essential Responsibilities include: • Participate in geotechnical site investigations, assignment and assessment of geotechnical laboratory tests, preparation of investigation reports and apply site data to geotechnical design. • Interpret and analyze geotechnical data to determine type, classification, and engineering characteristics of materials. Work elements may involve boring/core logging, permeability testing, test pits, soli classification, and data processing of geotechnical information. • Participate in the planning, designing and overseeing construction and maintenance of earthwork projects and building structures following standard procedures. Typical projects will include waste rock facilities, heaping leach facilities, tailings storage facilities and their ancillary works. • Be actively involved in assisting with permitting, reclamation and closure activities and design work. • Prepare civil layout using computer-based modeling software. • Keep management advised of work status, workload, problems, and progress as related to work assignments. Work will be in both an office and field environment with travel to various outdoor sites determined by project needs. Adherence to safety standards including those of the firm, MSHA, OSHA is mandatory. Qualifications: • Strong working knowledge of, and experience in geotechnical field testing, civil engineering and geotechnical principles and mythologies. 4-6 years of field investigation and design experience. • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) in civil engineering with a specialization in geotechnical engineering or engineering geology. • Registration or eligibility, with the requisite experience, to be registered as a Professional Engineer (P.E.) is preferred. A valid driver’s license is preferred. • Proficiency in MS Office. Knowledge of Civil 3D, GEO-Slope programs, GINT, and other latest geotechnical design software would be an asset. • Must be able to read, analyze and interpret engineering reports, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Must also be able to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals, and to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, clients, colleagues and the general public. Competency in a second language, both spoken and written would be considered as an advantage.
