From most of what I've read and talking with some friends in the employment industry, it is helpful to have a few versions of your resume. You may consider different styles of the same basic resume, or an "employer specific" format tailored to attract the attention of the employer you really want a shot with. It's all about standing out from the herd once the basic qualifications for the job are identified and met.

One of the most common mistakes that people make is to create a standard resume and send it to all the job openings that they can find.

You need to taylor your resume towards each specific job you are applying for. If you are applying for a writing job compared to a job in a call center the necessary skills and experience needed are different in both positions. Therefore you would look at your work history and pull out the experiences/ skills that are relevant to the position you are applying for. So definitely yes you need multiple resumes. Have one as your main, but no use creating additional ones until you know specifically what you are applying for. Once you do know, simply edit your main one.
