A Geotechnical Special Publication on Waste Mechanics is now published by the American Society of Civil Engineers. The title of the publication is “Geotechnical Characterization, Field Measurement, and Laboratory Testing of Municipal Solid Waste” and it is GSP #209. The volume includes extensive chapters on the properties of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) as well as procedures/recommendations on waste characterization, field measurements and testing of MSW. It also contains opinion papers on waste mechanics research needs.

I served as the Editor of this volume and in my opinion all the authors demonstrated tremendous commitment in preparing each chapter. This volume includes a lot of unique and very valuable content as a result. I believe this volume will be a key reference material for landfill practicing engineers and future waste mechanics researchers.
