The Work that Geotechnical Engineers do is often invisible once construction is completed. If foundations, which are invisible , on which these structures stand were not satisfactorily designed, then these structures would not exist. A satisfactory foundation design of any structures requires the proper application of soil mechanics principles, accumulated experience and good judgement.
The Stability & life of any structure like a building, an airport , a road , dams , leeves , natural slopes , power plants etc depend on Stability , Strength & Deformation of Soils. Thus successful civil engineering projects heavily depend on Geotechnical Engineering. Geotechnical engineering is all about the study that what happens underneath the ground and how it affects what we build on the ground. Its about tackling the events like earthquakes, flooding & high wind events and try to figure out how to buiild structures that keeps human safer from that elements. In Every construction project must begin with a study to determine how the ground will behave when a structure is built on a specific site the specialized mission of geotechnical engineering is to study precisely how the ground behaves most people on earth don't know what geotechnical engineers do it's essentially dirt with numbers the job of every geotechnical engineer is to identify both existing and potential hazards and provide efficient and cost-effective solutions to ensure the divisions of Architects ,contractors civil engineers and designers can coexist with the realities of the earth.
The challenging part is that Geotechnical Engineers has to deal with new problems and learn new solutions everytime which makes it difficult and industry does trigger quite quickly, So there is new technologies & new engineering solutions all the time and its not just you learned and about to do key is not what you learned at university is whats coming out month after month and there is new ways of dealing things , new problems are rising you know growing water levels are changing and maybe planning changes. So whats used to be your key for development now isnt and all those adjustments mean that you need to adjust and that can be quite challenging because you need to be on top of your game and talk of keeping up with research and therefore meeting deadlines & Client expectations whne thing me be call posts are moving can be quite difficult thing to do but also to communicate to people. Of every structure built most of the credits goes to Architect, structurtal engineers, managers but no one sees realizes the contribution of "Unseen Heros".
Its a branch of civil engineering that should be looking to be taken more into consideration as there is a shortage of Engineers of all type and in geotechnical engineering it's worse .we really do need more geotechnical engineers ,it is a very interesting and gratifying career. Thus all the Geotech Engineers should be proud of choosing this field and always continue to serve our community.
