Student Activity at GeoQuebec 2015

Dear Members of Minig Geotechnique Group

The Canadian Geotechnical Society Mining Geotechnique technical committee is pleased to announce the first Student Event at the 68th Canadian Geotechnical Conference. The event is designed to establish and motivate the connection and collaboration between students whose research is related to Mining Geotechnique and students and practitioners who attend GeoQuebec 2015. Industry conference attendees are also encouraged to attend.

The event duration will be 1.5 hours. The event will begin with a 30 minutes period of initial socializing between the students and interested practitioner. We will have tables set up with certain broad topics of research so that students and industry participants would find each other more easily. Following up the networking and socializing, we will have two short presentations by two practitioners, each for about 20 minutes.

The speakers at the event will be Michel Julien, VP at Agnico-eagle Mines and Farzad Daliri, junior engineer at Thurber Engineering. You can find the speakers biographies below.  Following the presentations, the participants will have time to socialize. The ice-breaker event at GeoQuebec 2015 will follow this student event.

The student event will take place at the Québec City Convention Centre where the GeoQuebec 2015 is being held. The room will be announced later. Food and refreshments will be provided.

Speakers

Michel Julien is the VP Environment at Agnico-eagle mines. He has more than 25 years of professional experience as a consultant, teacher and expert in the field of mine environmental and geotechnical engineering. Dr. Julien holds a PhD in mineral engineering from Ecole Polytechnique of Montreal (1999).

Farzad Daliri is a geotechnical/tailings specialist at Thurber Engineering Ltd, Calgary, Alberta. He received his Ph.D. from Carleton University in 2013. His research was focused on the influence of desiccation on geotechnical stability of thickened tailings storage facilities. Dr. Daliri joined Thurber Engineering Ltd. on January 2014 as a geotechnical engineer. He has been involved in various industrial R&D and design projects related to Alberta oil sands tailings management.
