Discussion Topic : A COMPILATION OF VIDEOS USED IN A SOIL MECHANICS CLASS INCLUDING A VOYAGE THROUGH SAND!

Here’s a compilation of educational material that starts with the question “how can I motivate the study of Soil Mechanics topics in my class?” and provides answers with a combination of materials drawn from practice, research and education. One of the best ways to disseminate educational material to our colleagues is to describe how we use materials developed by others in our courses and provide full references for easy access.

In the attached excel file, Prof. Achilleas Papadimitriou shares with us the selection of videos and some still frames he uses in the first lecture of the course Soil Mechanics II to motivate the study of topics such as: Lateral Earth Pressures, Bearing Capacity, Flow of Water through Soil and 1-D Consolidation.

The lecture starts with the unique video “Granular Trip” by Desrues et al. (2013), where we move through the pore space of a sand specimen – it feels like we navigate through a multi-chamber cave. On behalf of all the geotechnical engineering instructors who will use the video in their classes and of all their students, TC306 thanks the creators of the video, Jacques Desrues, Cino Viggiani, Edward Andò and Steve Hall, for making it publicly available.
