Discussion Topic : Micro‐Macro Mechanics of Granular Geo‐materials - China‐Europe Conference on Geotechnical Engineering (Aug 13‐16, 2018, Vienna, Austria)

China‐Europe Conference on Geotechnical Engineering (Aug 13‐16, 2018, Vienna, Austria)

Special Session organised under auspices of the Technical Committee of Geomechanics under the Chinese Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, the Technical Committee of Geomechanics from Micro to Macro (TC105) under the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE), and the Association pour l’Etude de la Micro Mécanique des Milieux Granulaires (AEMMG)

Most geo‐materials consist of cemented or un‐cemented discrete particles. Such systems are different from 'classical' atomistic systems. There is no universally‐accepted continuum theory that can be used for geotechnical applications on the large scale, except few promising first attempts. Empirical models that catch many of the relevant features will be followed by more sound mathematical formulations, physical and mechanical insights, as well as calibration and validation procedures for continuum or multi‐scale models. With recent advancement of experimental and computational tools, we have a broadened vision of mechanical behaviour of geo‐materials from both microscopic and macroscopic perspectives, and we are gaining abilities to further develop phenomenological‐based to micromechanism‐based models in order to solve crucial geotechnical engineering problems.

The “Technical Committee of Geomechanics under the Chinese Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics” and the “TC 105 of Geomechanics from Micro to Macro in the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE)” actively promote fundamental understanding of the microscopic and macroscopic mechanical behaviour of geomaterials, and the connection of the two; the "Association pour l’Etude de la Micro‐Mécanique des Milieux Granulaires" (AEMMG) is organizing the Powders and Grains conference series and also aiming to bring microscopic understanding to the mechanical description of granular materials. This special session aims to provide an open forum for active researchers to present their latest findings related to micro‐macro mechanics of powders, granular matter and geomaterials, in an attempt to foster new generations of constitutive models that incorporate new microscopic insights and enable large‐scale engineering applications.

The special session welcomes any work related to (but not limited to) the following topics: characterization of grain‐scale properties, contact behaviour and modelling, particle‐fluid interaction, new‐generation constitutive models, new methodological developments in numerical methods (DEM, DEM‐based coupling methods, multiscale and multiphase modelling methods), and engineering applications. Please contact either of the session chairs for any enquiry on this special session.
