Discussion Topic : TC105 report "IAS Workshop on Emerging Scales in Granular Media” held in Hong Kong, 14-16 January 2020

The “IAS Workshop on Emerging Scales in Granular Media” was successfully held at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), Hong Kong, 14-16 Jan 2020 (see http://ias.ust.hk/events/202001esgm/). The workshop was financially supported by HKUST Jockey Club Institute for Advanced Study (IAS), Croucher Foundation, K.C. Wong Education Fund and Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering of HKUST. It was co-organized under the auspices of TC105 Micro to Macro Geomechanics of ISSMGE as a special event. The workshop was co-chaired by Jidong Zhao of HKUST and Zhenyu Yin of PolyU.

The three-day workshop gathered a total of 41 invited keynote talks in 12 plenary sessions, delivered by active researchers working in the broad area of granular media. Among the invited speakers, 21 came from USA, France, Netherlands, UK, Canada, Australia, Italy and Japan, 7 from mainland China and 13 from Hong Kong. The topical subjects in the program cover latest advances in theoretical, experimental and computational studies of granular media pertaining to their scientific challenges and engineering performances. The plenary sessions have been organized by the following subject topics: particle-fluid interaction, statistical granular mechanics, granular physics, multiscale modeling methodologies and applications, micromechanics and homogenization, failure of cohesive geomaterials, innovation in experimental geomechanics, constitutive modeling, big-data and machine learning.
