TC Chair: Erol Tutumluer
The goal of Technical Committee (TC) 202 is to apply broad engineering to bridge the gap between Pavement/Railway Engineering and Geotechnical Engineering. The main task is to promote co-operation and exchange of information and knowledge about the geotechnical aspects in design, construction, maintenance, monitoring and upgrading of roads, railways, airfields and harbor facilities. The task also covers the related environmental aspects. For these purposes, several main topics were identified and materialized in the main Task Forces of the Committee as follows.
Task Force 1. Promoting of use of nontraditional (such as recycled, large-sized or by-product) materials in road embankments and structural layers. Leaders: Mike Winter, Tuncer Edil, Buddhima Indraratna, and Erol Tutumluer.
Task Force 2. Stabilization and reinforcement of geomaterials and its implications in pavement and rail track design. Leaders: Erol Tutumluer, Buddhima Indraratna, and Seong-Wan Park.
Task Force 3. Intelligent construction in earthworks, development of guidelines, codes and specifications for effective use of IC technologies in earthworks. Leaders: Antonio Gomes Correia, Soheil Nazarian, George Chang.
Task Force 4. Rail track substructures, including transition zones, and transportation geodynamics. Leaders: William Powrie, Xuecheng Bian, Pauli Kolisoja, Tatsuya Ishikawa, and Buddhima Indraratna.
Task Force 5. Harbor geotechnics. Leaders: Yoshiaki Kikuchi and Tatsuya Ishikawa.
Task Force 6. Subsurface sensing for transportation infrastructure condition diagnostics among others. Leaders: Soheil Nazarian, and Andreas Loizos.
Task Force 7. Climatic effects on geomaterial behavior related to mechanics of unsaturated transportation foundations. Leaders: Yujun Cui, Bernardo Caicedo, Tatsuya Ishikawa, and Jiankun Liu.
Task Force 8. Organization of TC202-hosted Conferences, Workshops, and Webinars. Leader: Erol Tutumluer.
4th International Conference on Transportation Geotechnics (ICTG), Chicago, Illinois, USA, August 30 - September 2, 2020. Chairman Erol Tutumluer (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, ISSMGE TC202).
(i) Themes: Optimized geomaterial (including hydraulically bound materials and asphalt mixtures) use, reuse and recycling; Stabilization and reinforcement of geomaterials and its implications in pavement and rail track design; Climatic effects and unsaturated soil mechanics in transportation geotechnics; Intelligent construction in earthworks technology and management; Slope stability, stabilization, and asset management; Mechanistic-empirical design (road, railways, airfields and harbor facilities); Rail track substructures, including transition zones, and transportation geodynamics; Subsurface sensing for transportation infrastructure; Macro and Nanotechnology applied to transportation geotechnics; Effect of climate change; Sustainability in transportation geotechnics; and Case histories.
(ii) Workshops including 3rd Young Transportation Geotechnics Engineers (YTGE) Meeting will be organized during the conference event.
(iii) 3rd Proctor lecture will be delivered during at the 4th ICTG in Chicago, Illinois, USA.
(iv) Special attention will be paid to the publication of all the peer review papers that will be submitted to be indexed by Scopus and ISI Thomson Reuters Conference Proceedings Citation Index.

TC202 workshops will be organized during the following conference events: (1) XVII European Conference on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ECSMGE) in Reykjavik, Iceland in 2019; (2) XVI Asian Regional Conference on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ARC) in Taipei, Taiwan in 2019; (3) XVI Panamerican Conference on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering in Cancun, Mexico in 2019; and (4) ICSMGE 2021 in Sydney, Australia.
Task Force 9. Transportation Geotechnics
; Elsevier journal of TC202. Editors-in-Chief: António Gomes Correia; Erol Tutumluer, and Yunmin Chen. First issue was published in March 2014 of this quarterly journal, which aims to publish high quality, theoretical and applied papers on all aspects of geotechnics for roads, highways, railways, airfields and waterways.
