Discussion Topic : AYGEC 2026 Successfully Brings Together the Young Geotechnical Community in Lagos

The 10th African Young Geotechnical Engineers Conference (AYGEC 2026) was successfully held in Lagos, Nigeria, from 26 to 29 April 2026, bringing together young engineers, researchers, academics, and industry professionals from across Africa and beyond for several days of technical exchange, networking, and international collaboration.

Hosted at the University of Lagos under the theme Innovations and Best Practices in Geotechnical Engineering for African Development, the conference delivered a vibrant and engaging programme, with strong participation and high-quality technical presentations reflecting the energy and potential of the young geotechnical community across the continent.

AYGEC 2026 also benefited from the presence and support of ISSMGE President Marc Ballouz, whose participation highlighted the importance of the event within the wider Society and reinforced ISSMGEs commitment to supporting impactful young member initiatives. The presence of ISSMGE leadership at the conference sent a clear message about the value of investing in the next generation of geotechnical engineers.

Another important moment during the conference was the recognition of young lecturers through the BSL Award, acknowledging excellence among emerging professionals and contributing to the strong technical character of the event.

A particularly significant highlight was the presentation of the ILAM Medal to Prof. Samuel Ejezie Ejezie, Past Vice President of ISSMGE, in the presence of family, friends, and colleagues. The occasion marked a meaningful recognition of his outstanding contribution to geotechnical engineering and added further distinction to the conference programme.

The conference also included a technical tour of Eko Atlantic, one of the worlds major land reclamation developments, offering participants the opportunity to connect the conference discussions with a large-scale engineering project of international relevance.

For the ISSMGE Young Members Presidential Group (YMPG), AYGEC 2026 was a strong example of how regional young member events can strengthen technical exchange, international connections, and long-term engagement across the global geotechnical community.

AYGEC 2026 was not only a successful conference, but also a clear demonstration of the strength, engagement, and future potential of the young geotechnical community in Africa.
