Discussion Topic : Bright Spark Lecture Award - ISGSR

We are pleased to announce Bryant Robbins, Zi-Jun Cao and Takayuki Shuku have been selected as the recipient of Bright Spark Lecture award of ISGSR 2019.  They will speak at a special lecture session at the conference to be held in Taipei, Taiwan on 11 - 13 December 2019.

Here are their biography:

Byrant Robbins

Bryant Robbins is currently a geotechnical engineer in the Geotechnical and Structures Laboratory of the U.S. Army Engineering Research and Development Center. His experience in this position has included site characterization studies, embankment stability and seepage analysis, soil laboratory testing, centrifuge modeling of embankments, field erosion tests, and feasibility studies for various dam and levee modifications. Prior to working for the Army, Bryant worked for the Montana Department of Transportation where he performed surveys, hydrologic studies, bridge scour analysis, cost estimating, and civil design work. Bryant has a B.S. in Civil Engineering from Montana State University, a M.S. in Civil Engineering from Mississippi State University, and is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering at Colorado School of Mines. Bryant’s current research is focused on developing predictive methods for backward erosion piping beneath dams and levees.

Zi-Jun Cao

Dr. Zi-Jun Cao is an Associate Professor at Wuhan University, China, and is currently a visiting scholar at University of California, Berkeley, USA. He earned his PhD from City University of Hong Kong (2012). His main research interests include uncertainty quantification in geotechnical engineering, simulation-based geotechnical reliability analysis and design, and probabilistic observational method. He is the member of ISSMGE TC304 (Engineering Practice of Risk Assessment and Management) and TC309 (Machine Learning and Big Data), Geotechnical Safety Network, and Engineering Risk and Insurance Research Council of China Civil Engineering Society. He is presently serving on Assistant Editor and Editorial Board Member of Georisk (Taylor & Francis). He is a recipient of the Outstanding Young Researcher Fellowship, CAST (2017), Highly Cited Research Award, Engineering Geology, Elsevier (2017), the First Prize of Natural Science of Hubei Province, China (2017), Luo-Jia Young Scholar Award, Wuhan University, (2015), and Chu-Tian Scholar Award (2014).

Takayuki Shuku

Takayuki Shuku is an Associate Professor at Okayama University, Japan. He obtained his BE and MS from Shimane University and his PhD degree from Okayama University. His main research interests include inverse analysis and machine learning in geotechnical engineering. He received the best paper award and the best young researcher award by the Japanese Geotechnical Society in 2013, the award for among the top five downloaded articles in Granular Matter during 2018.
