Pile Testing — Anomalies, Defects, and Flaws

Just this week I was out in the field measuring the existence of deep foundations. Apparently, they were not so deep... However, the non-deterministic test results reminded me of this great paper on the subject, by Dr. Joram Amir.
It was published in the proceedings of the ASCE 2002 Deep Foundation Congress, with the following definitions that are intended to make a clear distinction between:
1) The results of the integrity tests
2) The physical condition of the pile
3) The necessary action, if any.
The terms were incorporated in ASTM D6760 and can also be visualized using a Venn diagram (below) in which they can be depicted and distinguished.
