The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection is tasked with the responsibility of ensuring the protection of the state’s land, air and water. The protection of the environment is enforced through environmental monitoring, the execution of cleanup initiatives for contaminated sites, and the enforcement of strategies to prevent pollution. 

The Connecticut Water Quality Standards and Classifications play a significant role in protecting surface and ground waters. It contains criteria, standards and classification maps which is aimed at protection and restoration of water quality. Connecticut water quality standards cover Section 22a-426-1 through 22a-426-9. The standards define water uses and regulate discharges. 

Air Compliance Assurance serves to preserve air quality through inspections, monitoring, reviewing reports, and enforcement of relevant policies and regulations. DEEP’s Source Emission Monitoring (SEM) ensures air quality by defining pollutant emissions from various sources, enforcing federal and state standards on air pollution limits, and ensuring that air quality monitoring systems comply with audit tests. 

The Remediation Standard Regulations (RSRs) contained in sections 22a-133k-1 through 22a-133k-3 provide clean up standards for 88 substances. In sites where a contaminant is not among the 88 substances, the Commissioner must provide a numeric criterion for the cleanup process. The criteria used for contaminants not under the 88 substances are classified as Additional Polluting Substance (APS) criteria. It applies only to the specific sites where the additional contaminants have been found. 

Additionally, the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection deals with other aspects of the environment such as coastal management, endangered species, forestry, waste management, wildlife, wetlands, and geology. It incorporates a range of policies and regulation to foster the protection of the environment and human health.
